Road-legal vs show plates

Any finish on this page can be supplied as a fully road-legal plate, manufactured to British Standard BS AU 145e with the mandatory "Charles Wright" font, correct character sizes, spacing and reflectivity so it passes the MOT. As a DVLA-registered supplier, we are required by law to confirm your identity and your entitlement to the registration before we make road-legal plates — you'll be asked to provide proof (such as your V5C and photo ID) at checkout.

Show plates can be made in any style you like, but they are for off-road display only (car shows, private land, garage walls) and must never be fitted to a vehicle used on public roads.

What is the difference between 3D and 4D number plates?

3D gel plates use rounded, domed resin characters that curve up from the plate for a glossy, tactile finish. 4D plates use flat-topped letters laser-cut from solid acrylic, giving sharp square edges and a bolder, more angular look. 4D gel plates combine the two — 4D acrylic edges finished with a 3D-style gel dome.

What is a 4D gel number plate?

A 4D gel plate is a 4D laser-cut acrylic character topped with a domed gel coat. You get the crisp raised edges of a 4D plate plus the deep, wet-look gloss of gel in a single premium finish.

What is a Double 4D gel number plate?

Double 4D gel is our deepest, glossiest finish — two layers of laser-cut 4D acrylic stacked for extra depth, then crowned with a domed 3D gel coat. It's the most raised and glossy plate we make.

Are 3D and 4D number plates road legal?

Yes — every finish we offer can be made fully road-legal. Road-legal plates are manufactured to British Standard BS AU 145e with the correct 'Charles Wright' font, character sizes, spacing and reflectivity, so they're MOT-ready. By law we must verify your identity and your entitlement to the registration before making road-legal plates. Show plates are for off-road display only and are not road-legal.
